History and visit
Montefrìo was declared Conjunto Històrico Artìstico in 1982. Its origin is lost in beginning of the Prehistory, although the city does not come out until the Arab period, when it was seat of a small kingdom ruled by the king Ismael III. 26th May 1488, as part of the operations to put under siege Granada, the city fell under the power of the Catholic Kings.
It is a white village, irregular distribution, with narrow and slope streets. On the hill that crown it existed an Arab fortress, of which there are only some remains of the triple walls that surrounded it. In the plot of this fortress, it was built in 1507 the iglesia de la Villa, Gothic renaissance style, with main façade framed by 2 powerful buttress and the square tower and topped by a pyramidal roof.
Down, in the square of España, it is located the Ayuntamiento, sample of the civil architecture of Granada of XVIII century, with a nice façade in 3 floors.
Very close to the Town Hall, in the square of Josè Antonio, it raises the beautiful iglesia parroquial de la Encarnaciòn, from end of XVIII century, built following the plans of Ventura Dìaz, who draw a building of circular plant in the most pure neoclassic French style. In the distance it comes out the dome and the simple belfry, equally topped in other small vault.
The iglesia de San Antonio belonged to the Convent of San Francisco, already disappeared and which simple cloister is today the patio of the flour factory known as La Panera. The church is located in the square of the Convento, it is of baroque style and it has a sober façade, enhanced by the doorway in 3 parts, in the centre with beautiful salomonic columns and the last one with a niche with the image of San Antonio in it.


It comes from the slaughter of the pork, the chorizo is unique between all the good ones produce in Granada province. It is excellent the confectioner’s with specialities like the roscos de San Antonio, the roscos de anis, the borrachuelos and, mainly, the bolos de manteca.


On the 25th April is celebrated the romerìa de San Marcos in the peña de los Gitanos. Between the 14th and the 17th August, the patron`s festivities are celebrated and between the 18th and the 20th September, the Feria de Otoño.


4 km from the city by the road to Alcalà la Real, in the place called Peña de los Gitanos, it is situated the estaciòn arqueològica de Hipo-Nova, on great importance, in which it has been discovered megalithic dolmens, remains of the argaric period, ruins of a Iberian acropolis and Visigoths tombs.
