History

The origin of this city is Islamic; this is the time the remains of the fortress named Rute Viejo are dated from. Frontier land, from 1466 is part of the county of Cabra.
From XVII century the brandy industry developed, which reached it zenith at the end of XIX century. During the winter of 1926 lived in Rute the poet Rafael Alberti. Here he started to write his book El alba del alhelì.

Festivities

The Carnaval has turned into one of the most interesting of the province. On the 25th April, San Marcos day, people go to the country to eat the pavitas, small pieces of bread filled with hard boiled eggs. On the 2nd Sunday of May it is celebrated the Virgen de la Cabeza. From the 24th to the 28th of august is the Feria Real. In these festivities is still danced the chacarrà, jotilla accompanied by fandango songs. The Saturday nights come out to sing the Hermanos de la Aurora, whose songs are related to the Virgen Marìa.

Gastronomy

Anises y dulces navideños are their essential contribution to the province and national gastronomy. It has been recovered the jamòn, that Cervantes and Camilo Josè Cela praised each one in his time.

VISIT

At the bottom of the mountain has been raised the monumento al Anìs, at the end of this is situated the Museo del Mantecado. Going up the street Duquesa, where it is the parquet Nuestra Señora del Carmen, we get to Juan Carlos I. Here there are the Town hall and the iglesia de Santa Catalina, with an interesting baroque altarpiece. The city, with its steep streets full of flowers offers an image very romantic. In the higher part is the paseo del Fresno, where is located the Museo del Anìs, the Museo del Jamòn and the iglesia de San Francisco.

SURROUNDINGS

From the paseo del Fresno part several path routes as well as the road that takes to the complex Adebo, Asociaciòn para la Defensa del Borrico, (association to defend the donkeys), a place that needs to be visited when you travel with kids.15 kms by the A331 is located Iznàjar, a beautiful village at the bank of the reservoir of the same name, the biggest of Andalucìa.

SAN PEDRO DE ALCÀNTARA

(8.654 inhabitants) Màlaga province

History

Although in its times and without any doubts it was a roman village, the population was founded in the 60’s of XIX century by the marquis del Duero as a village of colonization. The first marquis brought in the most modern cultivation systems, ploughed and dried miles of hectares, he built dams and a good irrigation system and, besides the main village, he created the cortijos (farmhouses) of Cancelada, Cortès, Guadalmina, Los Gamonales and El Alcornocal, today they are nice urbanizations and touristic centres.
Between 1922 and 1950 the colony was divided in plots and sold to private people. In 1970 appears the tourism and San Pedro turns into in short time in a city. From these days come up its repeated attempts of independence from Marbella which, up till now, has crystallized in an administrative autonomy dated 21st September 1984.

Gastronomy

In the locality there are numerous restaurants that offer the best national and international cooking. As native dishes are the arroz a la marinera, the pulpo al ajillo and the cocido malcocinao, made of chickpeas and meat.

Festivities

19th march it is celebrated a romerìa to the eremite of the country house Alcuzcuz. Around 19th October, during five or six days, they celebrate their patron saint festivities for San Pedro de Alcàntara.

VISIT

The avenida del marquès del Duero, is the main centre and to each side the original village developed which growth has been unstopped recently. At the beginning of the avenida is located the iglesia parroquial, of colonial style, built in 1866, and the villa de San Luìs, seat of the tenencia de alcaldìa ( position of deputy major). The avenue of Mediterràneo drives us to the sea.
To the right, going towards the beach, in the urbanization Linda Vista, appear 2 monuments of interest. These are Las Bòvedas, roman hot springs from III century a. C.

The village has 3 magnificent beaches; the one with the same name, the one of Cortijo Blanco, towards Marbella, and the one of Guadalmina, towards Estepona.
