The long promenade of this sumptuous tourist village of la Costa del Sol, more than 7 kms long, frames the city from the Mediterranean sea, as counterpoint to the high mountains of la Sierra de Mijas which raise at its back.

History

Villa of  bastulo origin, it might have been a Phoenician colony and later a  roman enclave that enjoyed the condition of federated, that means, its inhabitants had their own laws, autonomy and right to be respected by Rome.

Said ben Kesadi, Tarik’s lieutenant, conquered it for the arabs around year 720. From that date it was known as Sohail, due to the clarity that boats cast anchor in its coast could see the southern constellation named this way by the arabs. In the second half of IX century, the Normans plundered and destroyed it.

In the year 956, the cordoban caliph Abdurrahman III ordered to build a beacon tower that the almorávides will turn into a castle 2 centuries later. Around 1400, a company of bolicheros – fishermen of tiny little fish from small fishing smacks- genoeses installed themselves in the place of the Salinas, area of the coast known these days as Los Boliches, and from them, or better said from the guironas or girolas that they used as fishing arts came up the actual name of the city, as it started to be known as Fuerte de las girolas and from here, Fuengirola. In the year 1487 passed to the authority of the Christians and that supposed a long period of decay that almost made it disappear. In 1841, just started its recover, it got to separate from Mijas, from which Town hall depended.

Gastronomy

Sea products nourish almost exclusively a cuisine extremely cheerful which has between its most traditional dishes the almejas a la marinera, the  fritura de pescado, the fideos abanda  and the  cazuela de papas with rape. Excellent desserts are the  roscos de vino  and the  dulces de polvo de batata.

Festivities

Fiestas de San Juan from the 21st to the 24th of June, which ended in the night from 23rd to the 24th in the beaches with bonfires and moragas of sardines (grilled sardines at the beach). On the 16th and 17th July celebrates the fiestas de la Virgen del Carmen, with sea procession. From the 6th until 12th October in honour of the Virgen de Rosario, with pilgrimage included, the Sunday before at the beginning of the fair ( 6th to 12th October) at El Esparragal, where famous verdiales are sang and danced.

Visit

From the old village of Fuengirola there is almost nothing left but the barrio de Santa Fe de los Boliches, opposite the beach of Los Boliches, inhabited by fishermen. The Castillo de Sohail, in not very good state of conservation, raises on a hillock, some hundred meters from the mouth of the river Fuengirola and it is the main distictive sign of the city. Focused enterily in turism, the city has a large equippment for this subjet. Magnificent buildings and urbanizations have emerged  along the last years.

A large promenade, where we can find every kind of shops, restaurants, bars and entertaintment places, it runs the  Gaviotas, Los Boliches and Santa Amalia beaches.

The sport port has 266 morrings, and the  fishing port, is very active and pintoresque. A minitrain runs during the summer season a route from the  Tahiti bar, through the promenade and the barrio of Santa Fe de Los Boliches, it shows in half an hour tour the most
 interesting points of the city.

In Fuengirola it is worth to visit the zoo, where a large varity of animal species are confined; as well as the country state of  El Secretario ( Monday to Friday from 10 h to 14 h), a roman bed in the west exit of the city, where there are hot springs and a fish factory.
