(43.109 inhabitants) Màlaga province

Inhabited from ancient times, maybe from Phoenician ages, the city gets in the history with the arrival of the Arabs, who called it Estebbuna and Alextebuna. In 1456 it was conquered and practically destroyed by Enrique IV of Castilla. The king rebuilt the castle, which will be used as defence for the berberisques pirates’ attacks and around it the new village was growing. In the age of Juana la Loca it belonged to Marbella, city of which they took their independence in 1729 by mercy of Felipe V.

The sea and market garden products join together in the cooking of this city. Native dishes are the sopa campera, and the sardinas al espeto.

The bobbin laces, design ceramic, works in leather and metal are the craftsmanship activities with the manufactures of artistic metal and glass.

In February, the comparsas and chirigotas of the Carnaval compete with their disguises and songs through the streets of the city. On the 15th may takes place the romerìa de San Isidro Labrador. The night of the 23rd to the 24th June is carried out the quema de los bigotes de San Juan, boy dolls made of different materials. The fiestas de Mayores are celebrated the first of the second week of July and on the 16th of this month the festivity of the Virgen del Carmen, with a massive sea procession.

Urban life

City of vacations, the life is organized for them. Mornings and afternoons are dedicated exclusively to the sea, for navigation or baths. Midday we can eat in any of the good restaurants close to the port and by the evening we go to a disco or tablao flamenco. In the middle, many practice sports as golf. Sunday mornings are to visit the market place installed in the port.

Visit and surroundings

The city keeps in its old part the shape and flavour of the urbanism in andalucian villages, which coexist with the coming up of the urbanizations for the tourist.
In the old part, formed by the theoric circle created by the streets Vera Cruz, Sevilla, Ausgusto Suàrez Figueroa, Viento, Real y Terraza, are the ruins del Castillo, which still keeps in good conditions the watch tower, built in 1585; the torre del Reloj, from XV century; the parroquia de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, work of XVIII century, baroque style with strong colonial influence, and places so nice as the plaza de las Flores. In the coast, following the sea line, there some watch towers of Phoenician origin, rebuilt by the Arabs.
The city has a good sports and fishing port for 900 moorings, as well as 21 km of coast with magnificent beaches likeplayas del Padròn, del Castor, del Saladillo, de la Plata and de la Rada. Costa Natura offers its installations for the nudism fans.

Garganta del Chorro o Paraje Natural del Desfiladero de los Gaitanes

It is a cleft more than 400 metres deep where the river Guadalhorce runs. In this place there is an artificial path hung on the side of a deep throat known as caminito del rey. Before it could be gone through, but nowadays the way by this dangerous and giddy  “ camino volado” over the vertical wall of the mountain is closed and forbidden because of the many accidents in the area. However, those that travel by train from Màlaga to Madrid, will have the opportunity of seeing this nature prodigy. Anyway, in the mountains around as well as the valle de Abdalajìs exist many places of great environmental interest.
